Former vice-president Gonzalo de Romaña, the chief executive of Peruvian fishmeal and fish oil producer Tecnológica de Alimentos (TASA), has been elected to succeed outgoing president Anne Mette Baek.

De Romaña said: “I am delighted to carry on the work with IFFO, The Marine Ingredients organisation, engaging with the whole marine ingredients value chain, supporting our members while addressing important topics, such as climate change, nutrition and responsible sourcing.

“More than ever, I am convinced that marine ingredients hold the key to an improved food production system, providing the most nutritious protein with a low carbon footprint.”

Egil Magne Haugstad, chief executive of Pelagia AS, which has fishmeal and fish oil factories in Norway, England, Scotland and Ireland, has been elected as vice-president.

Pelagia is also the largest producer of pelagic seafood globally and high-quality omega-3 concentrates in Norway. It runs the biggest fleet of vessels collecting category 2 and 3 by-products from the salmon industry. Category 2 includes morts, and category 3 largely comprises processing by-products.

According to IFFO, 13% of the world’s fish oil supply is derived from salmon (wild and farmed) by-products, along with 3.5% of the world’s fishmeal.
