Chile’s biggest salmon farmer, AquaChile, has expressed its deep regret over the death of a diver at one of its farms in the Aysén region last Friday.

As previously reported, diver Víctor Mauricio Guerrero Barría died while performing underwater work at the Serrano site located in Melinka, Guaitecas commune.

Preliminary reports indicate that the incident occurred around 2pm, when the team that was supporting the work lost communication with the diver. The team’s emergency diver immediately followed Guerrero’s hose down until reaching the stricken diver.

Despite the efforts made and resuscitation attempts, Guerrero could not be saved.

Safety 'a constant priority'

AquaChile, the world’s fifth largest Atlantic salmon farmer, told Fish Farming Expert’s Chilean sister site Salmonexpert: “We deeply regret the death of Víctor Guerrero Barría, a worker for the contracting company El Tridente, which occurred this Friday at the Serrano fish farm, located in Melinka.”

The company said the safety and wellbeing of people are a constant priority for AquaChile, “especially those who work directly or indirectly in our operations”.

“In the face of such a tragic event, we have been supporting those affected, the teams, and collaborating with the relevant authorities, who are investigating the circumstances of what happened,” AquaChile said.

The Chilean Navy and the Public Prosecutor's Office are investigating the fatality.
