Botanical solutions provider Sudvet joins Global Salmon Initiative

US firm wants seat at the table as it expands from Chile into Norway and Scotland

The Global Salmon Initiative (GSI) has announced that Sudvet Corp., an animal welfare company headquartered in Los Angeles, California, and specialising in botanical and biotechnological solutions for aquaculture, has joined as an associate member.

Sudvet develops botanical solutions aimed at reducing antibiotics and antiparasitic use in salmon farming. It offers a number of products that include AQ Bliss, a feed additive formulated with essential oils that is said to prevent fish stress during handling and help maintain the quality of the fish’s mucus.

Its Lyptus Plus product, used as an adjuvant, is said to protect the skin of fish and reduce the risk of infestations, while its C3C0S feed additive is a blend of natural organic acids and extracts with broad spectrum action that is said to offer good support for gut health  and improve fish growth and feed conversion ratio.

Expanding beyond Chile

The company works closely with many Chilean producers through its office in Puerto Varas, and is now expanding internationally, establishing offices in Norway, Scotland, and Australia.

A seat at the table

Sudvet joins GSI’s network of associate members, which brings together suppliers alongside its farming members, to help accelerate advancements in the sector’s sustainability performance.

The GSI is a leadership initiative established in 2013. Its salmon farming membership is strongest in Chile, and comprises Australis Seafoods; Blumar; Salmones Camanchaca; AquaChile; Multi X; Salmones Austral; Salmones Aysen; and Ventisqueros, along with Cermaq, which farms in Chile, Norway, and Canada.

Other salmon producing members are Grieg Seafood (Norway) and Australian farmer Tassal, now owned by Canadian fish farmer Cooke Inc.

GSI supply chain associate members include BioMar; Cargill; Merck, Sharpe and Dohme (MSD) Animal Health; PHARMAQ; Salmofood; and Skretting.
