As of August of this year, Chile exported 269 thousand tons of frozen seafood produced from aquaculture, worth US$ 1.176 billion in sales. The principal markets are as always Japan and the United States, clearly illustrated each month in the Cumulative Fisheries Harvest Report by the Undersecretary of Fisheries, however the sale value in these countries dropped considerably compared to August of 2007. Sales in Japan dropped 2.1% and a disheartening 17.6% in the United States. Following the dominant markets in order of importance are Russia, Venezuela, China, Spain and Italy. The top five frozen seafood products from aquaculture areAtlantic salmon, rainbow trout, coho salmon, mussels and scallops. The cumulative average price for these products as of August was US$ 4.4 / kg, which is lower than the cumulative average price in August of 2007 (US$ 5 / kg). Apart from the cumulative average, looking only at the month of August, the average price for the top five products was US$ 5.6 / kg).
