Dogfish are among the most common cartilaginous fish species in the world.

Sharks attack salmon farm

SalMar has discovered several areas of damage to a cage at the Årnes location in Namsos municipality in Trøndelag, Norway

The incident was reported by SalMar to Norway's Directorate of Fisheries on Friday, December 12.

The site is located in Lyngholmfjorden, reports Fish Farming Expert's Norwegian sister site, Kyst.no. The damage is due to extensive attacks by dogfish - a type of shark - and the fish in the cage in question have been moved to a different pen.

Don't know the extent

The farmed salmon in the cage in question are about 2 kg in size. The company has had a recapture net out, but this fishery has been terminated, among other things, due to the capture of dogfish.

The Directorate of Fisheries writes that it is too early to say anything about the extent of the incident. It is following up the matter with supervision, and has inspected the facility.

The Directorate of Fisheries asks fish farmers in vulnerable areas to have good control over the collection of dead fish. Fish treatment should also primarily take place during the day as dogfish are more active and aggressive at night.

Male dogfish usually measure a maximum of a metre in length, while females typically measure 1.25 metres.
