The next TriNation will be held at Queen's University, Belfast, Northern Ireland. What's new is that it now includes all viruses that affect the heart, not just salmonid alphavirus (SAV).

Belfast will host salmon TriNation meeting

The knowledge exchange event will be held in Northern Ireland on April 16 and 17.

The TriNation event is a meeting place for knowledge exchange about the most important viral diseases in salmon farming.

In a news story on the website of Norwegian aquaculture research funder FHF, it is stated that TriNation has opened the registration of abstracts with the deadline being February 6, 2026.

TriNation now includes all viruses that affect the salmon's heart, organisers write.

"TriNation invites industry representatives and researchers to submit abstracts with updates on ongoing research on viruses that affect the heart," they say.

Topics for the meeting

  • Situation updates (viruses affecting the heart)
  • Experience from the industry
  • Biosecurity and disease control strategies
  • Environmental impact
  • New research

TriNation particularly encourages presentations that share experiences from the industry, including those related to biosecurity and control strategies for managing infections and disease in the field.

"All new and relevant research on the three diseases (cardiomyopathy syndrome, heart and skeletal muscle inflammation, pancreas disease - editor), and their agents is welcome," the organisers write.

They also state that if more abstracts are received for oral presentation than there is room in the programme, the steering group will select the contributions that best fit.

Other contributions will be offered the opportunity to present as posters.

The most recent TriNation was held in Bergen in 2024.

Background

TriNation consists of R&D, government and industry stakeholders in Norway, Ireland and Scotland. The initiative has grown from a small group of committed researchers and industry stakeholders to a forum that attracts around 100–130 people to its seminars. The seminars are planned to be held every 18–24 months, and attract participants from other countries in Europe and internationally in addition to the three host countries.

FHF finances the secretariat for TriNation in project 902003 - Secretariat for TriNation (2025-2028).
