According to data from the Association of the Chilean Salmon Industry (SalmonChile), today 61% of the salmon farming sites in operation in Chile are located in the Aysén Region. By contrast, before its sanitary crisis, that region concentrated less than 40% of the farming sites in operation.

The general manager of SalmonChile, Carlos Odebret, explains that this trend responds to some sanitary safeguards. The industry would prefer to create neighborhoods with sites farming just one species at low stocking densities “and Aysén counts with more space than the areas nearby Puerto Montt”, he added.

Besides, he commented that several companies have already moved their entire amount of farming sites in operation into the Aysén Region, such as Pesquera Los Fiordos, Acuinova Chile and Salmones Yadrán.

In this manner, the 10th Region (Los Lagos) has lost its position as the region with the largest harvests of salmonids in the country, El Mercurio reports.
