Aquaculture innovation body seeks experts for Science Panel
Scotland-based aquaculture innovation body SAIC is inviting experienced professionals from across aquaculture and related fields to join its independent Science Panel. The call is open until May 29.
Established in 2014 as the Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre and recently re-named as the Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Cluster Ltd, SAIC aims to accelerate sustainable growth across Scotland’s aquaculture sector by funding and facilitating collaborative R&D activity. It connects businesses with researchers to tackle key challenges, enhance productivity, reduce environmental impact, and support long‑term resilience across finfish, shellfish, and seaweed.
The SAIC Science Panel will provide independent scientific advice to the organisation’s board and help shape future R&D and innovation activity. Up to 12 members will be appointed for a two‑year term. Panel members will:
- Review project proposals and assess scientific quality, innovation potential, sector relevance, and real‑world impact
- Contribute to horizon scanning and emerging technology insights
- Connect with national and international networks across science, innovation, and industry
A balanced mix
SAIC said it welcomes applications from experts in aquaculture science, applied technologies, and related disciplines. Academic affiliation is not required and international perspectives are encouraged. SAIC aims for a balanced mix across finfish, shellfish, and seaweed.
Areas of particular interest include fish health and welfare, genetics, virology, environmental science, shellfish and seaweed cultivation, applied technologies (IoT, sensors, imaging), sustainability, and climate resilience.
Panel members should bring recognised expertise, strong networks, and the ability to provide clear, constructive evaluation. Meetings will take place at least twice per year, primarily online, with additional time required for proposal reviews.
