Big drop in salmon escapes in 2008

According to Scottish Government official statistics obtained by FishfarmingXpert, overall total of salmon is down by 62 per cent compared with 2007, when 154,466 salmon escaped from Scottish farms. The first two escapes in 2008 happened at Balta Island Seafare in Shetland, where 30,000 fish escaped in total.

In March, a Marine Harvest farm in the Western Isles lost 20 fish due to a handling error.

In August another Lighthouse Caledonia site at East Loch Roag lost 7,437 salmon. 

In October, Marine Harvest lost another 7,424 fish from a Highland site. And at the end of December, 6,560 salmon escaped from Loch Duart.
