Chile still tops US exports

Chile exported salmonid products to the US worth $1.122 billion in the first 11 months of 2015, down 17.5 per cent compared to the $1.36 billion registered in the same period of 2014.

Chile was the largest exporter of salmon and trout to the USA in the first eleven months of 2015, exporting a total of 127,275 tonnes - a 0.6 per cent increase in volume compared to the same period of the previous year (126,517 tonnes). The largest decrease was in the exports of fresh whole Atlantic salmon.

Canada was in second place, with returns of US$ 552.85 million and 83,895 tonnes. Those results represent 21.1 and 42.4 per cent increases in value and volume, respectively, compared to the first eleven months of 2014. The largest increases were in fresh whole Atlantic salmon.

According to the trade data published by the Fisheries Statistics Division of the NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, Norway was in third place with sales of US$ 331.90 million and 37,641 tonnes. Those numbers represent 14.6 and 48.2 per cent increases in value and volume, respectively. In this case, the largest increases were in frozen fillets and fresh whole Atlantic salmon.

Meanwhile, China was in fourth place, with returns of US$ 206.81 million and 33,925 tonnes. These figures represent 7.8 and 12.4 per cent decreases in value and volume, compared to the first eleven months of 2014. The largest increase was in frozen fillets of salmon NSPF.

Finally, the United Kingdom was in fifth place, with returns of US$ 97.72 million and 12,579 tonnes. Those results represent 26.5 and 18.6 per cent decreases in value and volume, respectively, compared to the first eleven months of the past year. The largest decreases in Scottish products were in fresh whole salmon and fresh fillets.

In total the US imported 324,566 tonnes of salmon and trout, worth US$ 2,580.49 million - a 6.9 per cent decrease in value and a 9.1 per cent increase in volume compared to the same period of 2014.
