Tesco commits to 100% Scottish fresh salmon in its Scottish stores
Britain’s biggest supermarket chain, Tesco, today announced it will move to 100% Scottish-sourced fresh salmon in its Scottish stores from next spring.
The commitment builds on the 44% volume growth in Tesco’s Finest Scottish Salmon range across both its fresh and smoked ranges in 2024.
Tesco is also aiming to achieve a fully Scotch beef supply chain by spring 2026, ensuring all beef in Scottish stores will be reared, sourced, and packed in Scotland.
Highest quality
Richard Wood, director of meat, fish, poultry, and eggs at Tesco, said: “Scottish produce is recognised as some of the highest quality food found anywhere in the world, and we already stock a significant range of quality Scottish produce.
“We’re now delighted to announce we’ll be able to offer 100% Scotch beef and salmon to customers shopping in our Scottish stores in spring 2026. Through collaboration with our supplier partners, we are able to ensure that our products are the highest quality for our customers, benefiting both farmers and suppliers, and the Scottish economy.”
Tesco qualifies its commitment by pointing out that at certain exceptional times of the year, it may need to top up its Scotch beef and salmon with those from other sources to ensure it can meet its customers’ needs.
There are 224 Tesco stores located in Scotland, around double the number of stores operated in the country by Sainsbury's, Aldi, or Lidl. Tesco has more than 4,300 stores across the United Kingdom.
The most popular fish
A spokesperson for trade body Salmon Scotland said: “Scottish salmon is the UK’s top food export and salmon is the country’s most popular fish, accounting for almost half of all seafood sales.
“This decision by Tesco, the UK’s biggest supermarket, to sell only Scottish salmon in its Scottish stores is very welcome and serves to highlight the growing consumer demand for healthy, affordable farm-raised Scottish salmon that is renowned for quality, taste and provenance.”
