Ayrshire fish farming net supplier W&J Knox Ltd and the Norwegian company Bio Marine AS have signed a distribution agreement for Bio Marine’s lice skirt and treatment tarpaulin solutions for the Scottish and Irish aquaculture markets.

Bio Marine said the collaboration marks an important step in its continued growth in the UK and Ireland, strengthening the company’s ability to provide customers with local expertise, efficient logistics, and responsive after-sales support.

W&J Knox began life as a small textile mill in Kilbirnie in 1778, and began making trawl nets more than a century ago, then branched out into aquaculture nets in the 1970s. The company, now majority owned by Norway’s Selstad, has a strong understanding of the Scottish and Irish aquaculture industries.

Comprehensive support

Bio Marine said that combined with the company’s capabilities in inspecting, washing, and servicing lice skirts, the collaboration will provide customers with comprehensive support throughout the entire product lifecycle.

“We are very pleased to enter into this collaboration with W&J Knox. Their strong reputation, manufacturing expertise, and local presence make them an ideal partner for Bio Marine. Together, we can provide UK fish farmers with high-quality lice skirt solutions, backed by responsive local support and strong industry expertise,” said Nils Hovden, sales manager at Bio Marine AS.

Lice skirts act as a physical barrier that limits farmed salmon’s exposure to salmon lice larvae in surface waters. As part of an integrated salmon lice management strategy, lice skirts can contribute to improved fish welfare while supporting more sustainable aquaculture production.

“Bio Marine’s lice skirts and treatment tarpaulins are an excellent addition to our product portfolio. This new collaboration strengthens our commitment to creating value for our customers and contributing to a sustainable aquaculture industry,” said W&J Knox managing director Finlay Oman.
