Cooke-owned feed mill sold more but made a loss last year
Cooke-owned salmon feed producer Northeast Nutrition Scotland (NNS) made an operating loss of £107,323 last year, compared to an operating profit of £101,946 in 2024, its newly published annual report shows.
The company, which operates a plant in Invergordon in the Highlands, made a post-tax loss of £466,946 in 2025, compared to a post-tax profit of £418 the previous year. Net assets at the end of 2025 were £53,032, down from £519,978 at the end of 2024.
“The mill continues to have capacity to meet the feed requirements of its fellow subsidiaries,” NNS’ directors wrote in the report.
“Turnover decreased 7% to £84.7 million in the year, mainly due to an 11% decrease in the sales price offset by a 4% increase in volumes.
“Cost of sales decreased 7% to £84.9m This was as a result of the reduction in the cost of materials used.”
The number of staff at Invergordon increased by five, from 29 to 34, and staff costs increased from £1.44m in 2024 to £1.7m last year.
Can produce 100,000 tonnes
NNS has a production capacity of 100,000 tonnes per annum and holds Label Rouge and Soil Association Organic accreditations, as well as Veterinary Medicines Directorate licences to manufacture medicated feed to veterinarian prescription.
The Invergordon plant primarily produces feed for Orkney and Shetland salmon farmer Cooke Scotland, and recorded sales of £77.6m (2024: £84.7m) in the UK last year.
It also chalked up sales of £0.87m (2024: £0) to the United States, and £6.2m (2024: £6.8m) to the rest of the world.
Both Cooke Scotland and NNS are owned by Cooke Aquaculture UK Holdings Ltd, which is part of family-owned Canadian company Cooke Aquaculture Inc., which operates salmon farms in Canada, the US, Scotland, Chile, and Australia (Tassal).
The New Brunswick-based company also farms seabass and sea bream, whiteleg shrimp, and barramundi, and owns Omega Protein, a US company that sources forage fish from the Marine Stewardship Council-certified Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico menhaden fisheries. Menhaden have a high omega-3 content and are a source of fish oil and fishmeal used in aquafeed and other applications.
