Mowi Scotland increased staffing by 8% last year
Salmon farmer added another 62 people to its payroll as it expanded production to 71,600 tonnes
The number of staff employed by Scotland’s biggest salmon farmer, Mowi, increased by 62 (8%) last year, from 773 in 2024 to 835, the company’s newly released annual report shows.
The number of employees involved in production rose by 57 to 758, and the number employed in marketing, selling and distribution rose by three to 32. The number of administrative staff increased by two to 45.
Mowi Scotland’s staff costs rose by £5.5 million (13%), from £42.3m in 2024 to £47.8m.
The company’s turnover in 2025 was £632.5m, a drop of £25.8m (4%) from the £658.3m in revenue in 2024. Operating profit was £45.3m, a 15% drop compared to the £53.3m made in 2024, and profit after tax was £27.6m (2024: £36.5m).
Lower prices
“Whilst there was a 14% increase in harvest volumes (Editor's note: to 71,605 gutted weight tonnes), there was a 16% decrease in achieved sales price driven by increased market supply,” directors wrote in their strategic report.
“Overall, profit on ordinary activities before taxation was 6.82% of sales revenue in 2025 compared to 7.32% in 2024 - the decrease is driven by the reduction in the achieved sales price.”
Mowi Scotland, which supplies Sainsbury’s own-label salmon products, sold 52% of its harvest under fixed price contracts. This compares to 63% in 2024. The percentage of harvested fish classed as superior quality was 93% (2024: 94%).
Just over half of Mowi Scotland’s turnover was generated in the UK, where it recorded sales of £323.6m (£320.1m). Sales to Europe were worth £244.4m (£296.9m), and sales in North America increased to £48.5m (£30.5m). Sales to the rest of the world also increased, from £10.8m in 2024 to £16.05m.
