The world's largest feed barge is on its way to Bakkafrost

The barge will be towed straight to the site in the Faroes and begin feeding fish

In a news update, fish farming supplier GroAqua says it has completed what it calls the world's largest feed barge, measured in feed storage capacity and number of feed lines. The company has now begun towing the raft from its yard in Poland to one of Bakkafrost's locations, where it will be quickly put into operation.

A big thank you to everyone on our team, who have worked tirelessly to deliver this impressive project, writes GroAqua.

Huge capacity

The feed barge holds 1,100 tonnes of feed and has 24 feed lines, making it possible to feed 24 cages simultaneously. The barge will be equipped with GroAqua's latest technology, GroVision, which allows it to operate automatically and unmanned.

The barge has capacity for 1,100 tonnes of feed.

The barge is built to withstand harsh weather conditions and operate in exposed locations. GroAqua writes that it is building three of this large barge type to be delivered to the aquaculture industry in 2025.

Established in several countries

Aquaculture industry suppliers JT electric and Sterner AquaTech UK rebranded as GroAqua in 2023. JT electric was founded in 1972 in the Faroe Islands. In recent years, the company now known as GroAqua has expanded internationally and established itself in Scotland, Denmark and Poland.

In January 2024, Havida from Brønnøysund in Norway and GroAqua merged.  They now have more than 100 employees.

The company specialises in delivering large-scale feed barges to exposed locations.

The barge can feed 24 pens simultaneously.
