Salmon farmer Bakkafrost Scotland has handed over sponsored kit to the Western Isles Island Games Association (WIIGA) ahead of its participation in the International Island Games that begin on Saturday in Orkney.

It is expected that 4,000 participants from 24 member islands will attend the Games, which run until July 18.

Bakkafrost Scotland managing director Ian Laister said: “This is the tenth consecutive time we have had the honour of sponsoring WIIGA, and it is fantastic to be able to support athletes.

“Events like the International Island Games represent the very best of sport, bringing people together from all over the world to compete, and also to foster new friendships.

“The handing over of kit is a real milestone; it signals that competition is just around the corner and all the hard work and dedication is about to be put to the test. We wish all of those competing the very best of luck and are proud to be part of the event.”

Bakkafrost has supplied equipment including tracksuit tops and sports bags for the WIIGA competitors.

WIIGA will take a squad of 105 covering eight sports to the Games. The squad includes 88 competitors plus coaches, management and medical team. The team will take part in archery, athletics, badminton, bowls, cycling, men’s football, women’s football, men’s golf, women’s golf and swimming.

General team manager, Iain GG Campbell, said WIIGA was grateful to Bakkafrost Scotland, its main sponsor, for its continued financial and marketing support.

“We know the company is committed to be supporting the communities in which employees live and work and the sponsorship helps local athletes make an impact on the global stage.”

WIIGA is taking 43 female competitors and 45 male competitors to Orkney. These include swimmer Kara Hanlon, who has represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Games and will be hoping to add to her tally of 12 Island Games medals.
