The newly appointed head of the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) commercial unit has said translating the applied science produced at the Oban institute into real-world applications will be a priority.

Steve Ham will lead SAMS Enterprise as it develops its marine consultancy and products to help the emerging blue economy in the UK and abroad.

With experience in business development and the subsea, aquaculture, energy, and marketing sectors, Ham believes he can help to develop the institute’s diverse portfolio of expertise.

Talent and expertise

He said: “With the diversity of talent and expertise at SAMS we have a unique offering to support organisations working in the blue economy space and I am excited about the potential we have here.

“SAMS research has been pivotal to a number of developments in industry, not least sustainable aquaculture, marine renewables, robotics, and seaweed farming.

“At SAMS, we’re committed to bridging the gap between research and industry. I want to help to accelerate this effort by creating opportunities for collaboration, research commercialisation, and delivering solutions for clients.”

SAMS Enterprise provides specialist marine consultancy, underpinned by SAMS' world-class science. It also operates the Seaweed Academy and Scientific Robotics Academy training courses, as well as the Seaweed Nursery, which provides seeded line and biobanking services for the seaweed cultivation industry.

The ideal candidate

Previously Ham has led commercial services sales at Aberdeen-based underwater capabilities provider JFD Global, been commercial director at diver training business The Underwater Centre and consulted for a number of marine-related businesses.

SAMS director Professor Nick Owens said: “We are delighted to have Steve at the helm of SAMS Enterprise.

“With his experience in the many industries that benefit from our science and his skills in business development, marketing and sales, Steve was the ideal candidate to take our commercial offering to the next stage of its development.

“There is a real need for quality science and services to support the fast-developing blue economy and SAMS Enterprise is able and willing to play its part.”
