"We have had an escape from a wellboat transferring fish into the area. We are still very early on in the investigation but we believe that human error has been a part of it," said GSS managing director Grant Cumming.

"We are working with the wellboat providers to make it impossible for it to occur again.

"They had started pumping with the wrong valve or the valve in the wrong position, but it is still very early in the investigation."

The 14-month-old fish had an average weight of between 250-300 grammes.

The incident occurred last Thursday and was reported to Marine Scotland the same day.
