Profile boost for Scottish salmon

During the last few years, a number of UK ’s leading retailers have committed to only buying Scottish farmed salmon, which has been a positive development for the Scottish salmon farming industry. Now, the profile of salmon from Scotland is also getting a boost as the fish is starring in several high-profile supermarket advertising campaigns.

These campaigns include the likes of Sainsbury’s ‘responsibly sourced salmon’ headed by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, M&S’s television adverts featuring the premium product Lochmuir salmon, and Morrison’s advertising push to highlight the wide range of fresh food prepared in-store with billboards and promtional images featuring salmon.

As shoppers feel the effects of the current economic climate and are reportedly moving towards affordable items, brands and ‘low-cost retailers’, the popularity and profile of salmon in the UK is remaining high.

Ken Hughes, form Scottish Salmon Producers ' Organisation, told FishfarmingXpert: “Over the last few years sales of fresh fish have grown faster than those of any other protein in UK retailers. As recent promotional activity has included TV, press and billboard advertising as well as PR support, salmon currently enjoys a high, positive profile.”
