In a week’s time over 200 delegates will participate in a sold-out conference in Victoria- the capitol of British Columbia on Vancouver Island. Presentations at “Sealice2010” will be made by scientists from both coasts of Canada, from Australia, Chile, New Zealand, Norway and Scotland. Sessions will include

  • Global Perspectives
  • Epidemiology and Management
  • Resistance
  • Genetics
  • Physiology and Functional Biology and
  • Wild/farmed Interactions

A similar event was held in Vancouver in 2003, resulting in a list of priority research projects that were summarized in the final report by the BC Pacific Salmon Forum in January last year. In its 16 recommendations, the Forum “…also see a future where salmon farming is viewed as an important economic driver and a legitimate user of the marine environment that is compatible with healthy wild salmon populations”.

VOCM News of St. John’s, Newfoundland reports that;

Delegates from all over the world will be converging on St. John's later this month for a major conference on aquaculture. Upwards of 400 delegates will be in St. John's from May 16-19 as the National and Provincial Aquaculture Industry Associations co-host this event, along with the provincial government. Spokesperson Cyr Couturier says delegates will be coming from different parts of Canada, China, France, Norway, Iceland and other countries. The theme for the conference is "Successful Partnerships for a Sustainable Future." Couturier says there will also be a major forum on mussels, covering all aspects of that industry, along with discussions on cod farming and sustainable seafood production.

During the conference, an Alumni Award will be issued to a former graduate of the Fisheries and Marine Institute of the Memorial University of Newfoundland.
