Third purpose-built fish farming ship has started work in China
China has “entered a new stage of intelligent, standardised, and industrialised operation” of ship-based fish farms, according to a video about the official naming of the third such vessel.
Guoxin 1 2-2 is 244.9 metres long, and has a pen volume of 100,000 cubic metres.
Purpose built in just 18 months, the vessel follows in the wake of the Guoxin 1, and the Guoxin 1 2-1.
“Since the world’s first 10,000-tonne smart fishery breeding vessel Guoxin 1 set sail, to the 2.0 version of the farm ship 2-1 iteration, and now the delivery of Guoxin 1 2-2, the three ships’ links signal that deep-sea aquaculture in ships has entered a new stage of intelligent, standardised, and industrialised operation,” the video’s captioning says.
Like its sister ships, the Guoxin 1 2-2 has deep water intake, and carries out processing on board.
Construction of the vessel, which has a displacement of 150,000 tonnes, started in October 2023, and sea trials were completed in March this year. The vessel has now entered commercial operation.
As well as purpose-built vessels, China is also converting former cargo ships for use as fish farms.
