Market strengthens and price rises for Norwegian salmon
The spot price continues its slow rise, and is above the same week last year for the eighth week in a row. There are signals from the market of increasing demand.
According to industry data provider Akvafakta, the spot price of market-influencing Norwegian salmon rose by NOK 2.35 per kilo in week 46, up to NOK 76.62 (£5.75) per kilo.
That is NOK 6.77/kg above the price in the same week last year. The spot price has been higher than it was in the same period last year since week 37.
The average spot price so far this year is NOK 75.84/kg, compared to the equivalent of NOK 93.22/kg in 2024.
Demand picking up
In an analyst comment from Scandinavian bank SEB, Sander Lie writes that he expects the price to increase by a couple of kroner this week, and that it will increase by another 3-4 kroner next week.
"The salmon price continues in a strong trend," he writes in his comment.
He further writes that his industry contacts report that demand is picking up ahead of Christmas, with strong signals in central European markets, while demand in Asia looks solid.
"Otherwise, available volume in the market seems stable," he writes.
Exports
Norway exported 34,445 tonnes (round weight) of salmon in week 46. This is 1.8% lower than the same week a year ago, and is the lowest weekly export volume since mid-July.
So far this year, 1.41 million tonnes of salmon have been exported from Norway, 13.6% more than at the same time last year.
