Salmon industry ova supplier Benchmark Genetics today announced that Kristian Botnen has started as the company’s new chief executive.

Botnen’s past roles include more than five years at salmon farmer Lingalaks, first as chief operating officer (COO) and then as chief executive, then more than three years as COO of the Nordics sea-based division of sector supplier AKVA.

He is also chairman of the board of salmon farmer Kvarøy Fiskeoppdrett A/S.

Benchmark Genetics, which was sold to Novo Holdings by Benchmark Holdings earlier this year, said Botnen has a strong track record in operational performance, strategic development and building high-performing teams.

Relinquishing the reins

“Having laid the groundwork for the next phase of Benchmark Genetics in collaboration with the leadership team, I am very pleased to hand over the reins to Kristian,” said Aleks Engel, who is partner at Novo Holdings and was interim CEO of Benchmark Genetics following the purchase.

“Kristian brings the leadership experience and industry insight needed to take the company to the next level. With the new leadership structure in place, we are well-positioned to strengthen our role as a leading global genetics partner to the aquaculture industry – with clear strategies for innovation and expansion.”

Botnen said it was inspiring to step into his new role and meet so many skilled and committed colleagues.

“The expertise and pride in the work we do are clearly visible throughout the company. I look forward to spending time in our operations, getting to know people and processes, and working closely with the leadership team to deliver on our strategic ambitions.”

Leadership structure

Benchmark Genetics has also formalised a strengthened leadership structure designed to improve strategic alignment, operational execution and customer focus. It said the new structure also ensures closer integration across production, commercial, and R&D in different countries.

Dr Ross Houston, a former professor at Edinburgh University’s Roslin Institute and a global leader in aquaculture genetics research, retains his position as the company’s chief scientific officer.
