On Monday, a closed cage built by Aquafarm Equipment for Japanese-owned salmon farmer Cermaq was lifted from the site where it was assembled on the quayside in Harstad, northern Norway, and placed in the water .

This week, the plant will be towed south to Cermaq's Horsvågen location near Hamarøy in Nordland, where it will be put into operation. The journey is approximately 60 miles.

Aquafarm Equipment said it was now starting with testing and adjusting circulation, calibrating sensors and setting up deep water intakes.

Control through design

The company has previously said that the first fish stocking is planned for December.

"Closed facilities provide environmental control through design: deep water intake, controlled water flow, oxygenated intake water and sludge collection – to protect fish welfare and ensure predictable operation through the winter," said Aquafarm Equipment, which is based in Haugesund, southwest Norway, and has an office on the outskirts of Glasgow, Scotland.

The cage is the fourth in the series from Aquafarm Equipment. The huge pen is  comprised of modular sections made in Latvia and transported to Hardstad for assembly.

The closed facility will be towed to Cermaq's Horsvågen location.
The project entails close collaboration between Aquafarm Equipment and Cermaq.
