Francisco Miranda, general manager of Mainstream Chile, explained that the new regulation related to aquaculture licenses implies a 30 percent decrease in their production capacity. Therefore, the company has decided to retake a project they have pending since 2004: produce salmon in the Region of Magellan. This project involves a US$ 25 million investment.

According to the financial journal Diario Financiero, Francisco Miranda commented that this project allow them to diversify their production even more. The company produces the three salmonid species farmed in Chile (Atlantic salmon, Coho salmon and Rainbow trout) and also wants to be present in all the geographic areas where this economic activity operates.

Mainstream Chile sowed the first smolts in the Magellan Region  by the end of 2011 so the company expects to harvest their first fish in that region in 2013 and produce around 10 000 tonnes every following year.

Given that the company wants to farm and process fish in the Region of Magellan, the next step in their plans is building a processing plant in that area. Mainstream Chile expects to start the construction of that facility within the next 12 months.
