Mainstream denies latest news about lay-offs
The news published recently in the local news El Llanquihue and the OLACH about the company Mainstream laying off 260 workers sparked a swift reaction on behalf of the company to clarify information. According to a press release in Aqua.cl, Mainstream has temporarily cut 37 jobs from its farm sites that have completed their production cycle and will require a fallow period. The duration of fallow periods will be was not made clear however. And with respect to the other 222 jobs mentioned from the company’s processing plant in Quemchi, the company claims that these jobs are the traditionally temporary positions in the plant during the high production season of December through March. The company accused Rosa Bahamonde, Secretary of the National Confederation of Salmon Industry Workers (CONATRASAL) of over-exaggerating her claim about these job losses, since they have traditionally been temporary in nature.
