Funding announced for closed containment trial
Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC)- a government-owned not-for-profit foundation has teamed up with the US based Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to finance the "exploration and demonstration of commercial-scale solid wall containment systems incorporating waste recocery, for salmon aquaculture".
The announcement from SDTC did not specify how much money they were giving to this initiative, but it stated that CAD $ 48 million was to be spent on 19 new projects, including this one, as well as projects on power generation, waste management, transportation and climate change.
Sustainable Development Technology Canada is a foundation created by the Government of Canada that currently operates a CAD $ 550 million fund "to support the development and demonstration of clean technologies- solutions that adress issues of climate change, clean air, clean water, and clean soil to deliver environmental, economic and health benefits to Canadians".
The Moore foundation gave almost US $ 24 million to environmental groups involved with campaigns against salmon farming in B.C. during the period 2001-2006. Another US $ 45.8 million was given to US based ENGO's involved in anti-salmon farming activities over the same time period.
