Friosur plays down talk of expansion
Friosur is one of Chile's largest salmon producing companies. After acquiring assets from Pesquera Landes and Lerøy Seafood Group, the production potential of the company has reached more than 80,000 tonnes per year.
However, the company’s president has firmly curbed excessive production plans, claiming that overproduction was responsible for Chile's ISA virus crisis.
"This year we hope to harvest around 25,000 tonnes in total, within a program of gentle and sustainable growth," said Joachim Wessel, general manager of the company's salmon division. He added the company will not contemplate growing until next year, according to the financial journal Estrategia.
Friosur produced about 23,500 tonnes of salmon last year, continuing their gradual recovery from the ISA crisis.
"We are operating with about 10 farms in the region of Aysen. We have 50 aquaculture licenses so far," said Wessel.
The firm insists it has no intention of reaching its maximum production capacity (80,000 tonnes) in the near future.
