Fresh fillets for the USA
By March of this year Chile sent 19,903 tons of fresh fillets to the United States, which earned US$ 160 million in sales. Compared to last year’s first quarter this is a 9% increase in volume and a 30% increase in returns, according to AQUA.cl. In a recent statistical analysis of fishery product imports published by the United States Department of Commerce, Canada, Norway and the United Kingdom follow far behind Chile as suppliers of fresh salmon fillets for the US market. Canada sent 893 tons with earnings of US$ 8 million; Norway sent 625 tons and sold US$ 5 million; and the UK sent 609 tons and earned US$ 4 million. In total for this year’s first quarter, the US imported US$ 180 million worth of fresh Atlantic salmon fillets, totalling just over 22,200 tons.
