The family firm's "Gigas" oysters were awarded first prize by a panel of five judges at the Association of Scottish Shellfish Growers' annual conference in Oban.

Shetland Mussels Ltd were judged to have grown the best mussels and Caledonian Oysters Ltd, fron Loch Creran, took the honours in the search for Scotland's best European native oysters.

The judging panel comprised journalist and shellfish farmer Nicki Holmyard, Oban seafood veteran John Ogden, American oyster producer Andy de Paola, Sainsbury’s aquaculture and fisheries manager Ally Dingwall, and chair of Shetland Food and Drink, Marian Armitage.

Holmyard said: "It was a surprisingly difficult task choosing winners in all three categories but when the scores were added up the decisions were unanimous, though close."
