Faroe Islands aquaculture research institution Fiskaaling hosted three webinars featuring sea lice, environment and salmon farming experts from around the world.

The conference had 14 scientific sea lice presentations, an overview of current global trends, and five sponsored presentations. Around 1,200 individual logins were registered for the event.

Using research

Introducing the conference, Faroes minister for environment, aquaculture, industry and trade Magnus Rasmussen said: “We cannot underestimate the importance of putting the results and data from international sea lice research to good use. In fact, this is important from several different perspectives – science, industry, authorities and society at large. It is a win-win situation.”

The first day’s topic was “Host and parasite biology: keys for control” and included presentations from Maine University aquaculture biology professor Ian Bricknell, Stirling University lecturer Armin Sturm and AquaBounty geneticist Laura Braden.

The second day’s topic was “Environmental impacts and societal responsibility”, and the final day’s topic was “Expanding options for integrated pest management: improved tools for a sustainable future”.  The session included a presentation on genetic selection by Ross Houston of Edinburgh University’s Roslin Institute and one from Ketil Rykhus, veterinarian and external relations chief for Norwegian salmon farmer SinkabergHansen AS, on reducing sea lice through new production approaches.

Each of the day’s webinars is now available to view via the links below.

13th conference

Fiskaaling is organising the 13th Sea Lice International Conference, which will be held in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, on May 9-13 next year. More information about registration and submission of abstracts for the event can be found here.

“The organisers at Fiskaaling and the committee are very pleased to have provided the scientific community and the industry with an opportunity to meet, present and discuss topics and issues of significant importance and relevance [at Sea Lice Online]. It is certainly a positive indicator for the 13th Sea Lice International Conference in May 2022,” Fiskaaling said on the event website.
