The firefighters, whose day jobs include fish farmers, teachers, postman and council workers, approached the company for funding to provide a thermal imaging camera for use within the North Isles of Unst, Yell and Fetlar.

Cooke agreed to meet the full £3,554 cost of the camera. Dennis Johnson, Cooke’s site manager at Unst, went along to meet with the team and hand over the equipment.

Available to the coastguard

A Cooke spokesperson said: “These volunteer firefighters take time out of their daily schedules to help ensure their community is kept safe, so it’s a pleasure to be able to help them in this way. The thermal imaging camera is an essential piece of equipment and we were pleased to be able to cover the cost through our local communities donation scheme.

“The donation of the thermal imaging camera will not only be used by the firefighters, as it will be available to the coastguard during search and rescue operations due to its capabilities at detecting an individual in difficult light.”
