Chilean salmonid export earnings up 26.1% in Q1

Salmonids were Chile’s top earning non-copper export product in the first quarter of this year, worth US $1.686 billion, according to figures from the National Customs Service.

Exports of salmon and trout in Q1 were worth 26.1% more than in the same period last year and represented 14% of total Chilean non-copper exports.

The United States was the principal destination for salmonid exports. Exports to the US were worth $708 million in Q1, an increase of 38%. The next most valuable markets were Japan ($364 m) and Brazil ($206 m).

Salmonids were followed in the quarterly ranking by fresh cherries, ($1.482 bn), lithium ($730 m), cellulose ($704 m) and fresh blueberries ($429 m).

Chile is the world’s second-largest salmon farming nation, after Norway.
