Aquafeed producer Cargill has released a preview of its sustainability report for 2017.

Cargill has delivered on its commitment to widen its sustainability reporting to all of its dedicated aqua feed facilities, according to its annual sustainability report preview issued today.

“After a decade of reporting on the sustainability of our salmon feed, we now address feed for shrimp, tilapia and other species” said Einar Wathne, president of Cargill Aqua Nutrition. “It’s important for us to support our customers with sustainability insights and to continue managing the impacts of our operations across the value chain.” 

Cargill said the sustainability report is once again based on a value chain approach to sustainability, which broadens the perspective of sustainability beyond the direct impact of its operations and into the wider societal impacts.

The full sustainability report will be published at the end of April but Cargill, which has an aquafeed mill at Bathgate, wanted to share highlights earlier than in previous years.

Highlights from the sustainability performance in 2017 include:

  • Cargill now reports on all 17 of its dedicated aqua feed mill facilities across 12 countries. This covers about 80% of Cargill’s aquafeed production footprint
  • In 2017 it reached a milestone in its sourcing policy, as nearly all of its 700 raw material suppliers signed the Cargill Aqua Nutrition Supplier Code of Conduct
  • With a continued focus on waste, especially plastic, Cargill Aqua Nutrition is recycling about 70% of its waste, a number is seeks to increase
  • It has improved nutrient resource efficiencies and developed functional feeds, reducing the impact of waste and disease on seafood producers.

Engagement with suppliers is driving fisheries to join improvement programs and soy processors to work with their suppliers on certification schemes.
