The “Salmon Pool” is offering funding to local charities and projects benefiting local people.

Public meetings have already been held in Scourie Village Hall, Sutherland, and Lochmaddy Village Hall, Uist, to highlight the opportunities the fund offers.

Loch Duart and Cargill will consider funding projects in four categories:

  • Sustainable livelihood initiatives within the communities of Sutherland and the Uists
  • Healthy living and welfare
  • Environmental enhancement
  • Educational initiatives

Alban Denton, managing director of Loch Duart, said: “We’re committed to supporting the local communities on which we rely to run our business successfully. I am thrilled that through our partnership with Cargill Aqua Nutrition we can, together, give something meaningful back to our wonderful local communities.”

David Morrice: "Responsible supplier."

Enhancing communities

David Morrice, country director of Cargill Aqua Nutrition, said: “Supporting local communities is very much at the heart of our commitment to be a responsible supplier to the aquaculture sector. We are excited to be launching the Salmon Pool fund with Loch Duart to provide support to enhance and sustain the communities in the areas where we live and work.”

The fund, which will be available until the end of December 2020, is not the first contribution Cargill has made to Sutherland, having previously donated £3,000 towards the refurbishment of Scourie village hall. Loch Duart has made a number of donations to community causes, including £10,000 towards the re-wiring of Scourie village hall in 2017.

Cargill owns EWOS, which supplies Loch Duart with a bespoke feed with a high marine content.

Loch Duart has eight active sites in Sutherland and three in the Uists, and produces around 5,000 tonnes annually.
