Aquaculture Europe draws 2,700 from 85 countries

This year’s edition of the European Aquaculture Society’s annual Aquaculture Europe event attracted more than 2,700 participants from 85 countries.

AE2019, held at the Estrel Hotel and Congress Centre in Berlin, also attracted a record 1,039 abstracts, resulting in 798 oral presentations (all sessions, including workshops and forums) and 443 poster presentations.

A trade show was also part of AE2019 and had 150 exhibitors.

E-posters

The statistics are included in a 96-page summary report of the event, which provides information on the AE2019 Plenary and Parallel Sessions, with a compilation of reports received by the session chairs.

A new part of AE2019 was the use of e-posters, 96 of which were presented in the sessions that were selected to pilot this presentation format.

Frank Mlingi: Won the inaugural Student Spotlight Award.

Also new in AE2019 was the Student Spotlight Award at the opening plenary session, as well as the AE2019 Innovation Forum and special sessions including “Women in Aquaculture”.

Three-minute pitch

The Student Spotlight Award involved three students each giving a three-minute presentation of their work, with the audience at the plenary session then voting by mobile phone to choose the winner. The first prize went to Frank Mlingi, of NTNU Norway, for his presentation about gonad development and plasma levels of sex steroids in farmed lumpfish under different photoperiod and temperature regimes.

The EAS has decided to continue the spotlight award annually following the success of its introduction in Germany.

Aquaculture Europe 2020 will take place in Cork, Ireland from September 29 until October 2.
