Norwegian investigator Dr. Ase Atland arrived to Chile in early 2007 to survey the needs of the salmon industry in terms of water quality testing and monitoring, and more importantly, in solving water quality problems especially in the fresh water production phase. According to Aquanoticias, NIVA first visited Chile’s salmon farming sector during the AquaSur 2006, an event that was key for the company to meet first hand many of Chile’s salmon producers. “For right now we offer water quality testing and monitoring for fish hatcheries, but analytical services are only a part the work that we offer our clients. Based on our analyses, our following objective is to determine how to improve the water quality, and in turn improve the growth and wellbeing of the fish,” states Atland. NIVA is currently contracted by two important salmon companies for such services, and has also provided services for over 15 aquaculture projects in the Chile’s salmon region.
