Malachite Green shows up again
In a letter to its customers, Creative Salmon General Manager Spencer Evans explains that the chemical is not used in any part of the company's farming operations, including their contract hatchery, feed supplier and processor. This is also stated on the Creative Salmon web site.
The US Food and Drug Administration notified the company just before Christmas that trace levels of malachite green had reportedly been found in a routine sample of fish from one of Creative's farms. The sample was collected at the border between Canada and the US in early December.
The company letter explains that the fish had undergone extensive testing for malachite green at various times during the production cycle, including testing at the hatchery before delivery, and at the farms site prior to harvesting. The fish feed given to these fish was also tested three times during the production cycle. All tests were negative for malachite green.
Harvesting from the site in question was halted immediately, and the company is cooperating with federal and provincial regulators in further sampling of the fish at the farm, being confident that the matter will be resolved in a timely manner.
