Frozen seafood now 65% of Chile’s volume
As of July of this year, Chile exported 243 thousand tons of frozen seafood produced from aquaculture, worth US$ 1.043 billion in sales. The principal markets are consistently Japan and the United States, and according to Aqua.cl, Russia, which has been a growing market for Chile dropped its demand by 4.4% compared to last year. Countries such as Spain, Italy and surprisingly Venezuela however compensated for this drop. In order of importance, the top five frozen seafood products from aquaculture are Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, coho salmon, mussels and scallops. The average price for these products (combined) as of July was US$ 4.3 / kg, which is slightly lower than the average price in July of 2007 (US$ 4.9 / kg).
