UK seafood companies, such as Birdseye, are now producing new, good frozen quality products, and according to Read, it seems as if though consumers are more aware of what is on offer in the marketplace. However, she says such a shift could also be dependent on other factors: “When there has been a hot summer in Britain, the sales of fresh seafood often increase. This summer has been very bad, and we have seen a decline in the sales of fresh fish. “A small group may have switched from fresh to frozen fish, but the main reason is probably higher prices for fresh products”, she says. According to Reid, frozen fish cost £4.98 per kilo on average, while fresh fish cost £8.47 per kilo. This is a significant difference from a consumer point of view.
