Focus on opportunity, urges new Seafood Scotland chair

The new chair of marketing organisation Seafood Scotland has welcomed the challenge of taking on the role during a “highly critical” period for the industry.

Kevin McDonell, chief executive of the West of Scotland Fish Producers’ Organisation (WSFPO) fishing co-operative, said: “While the Covid-19 pandemic and the UK’s imminent exit from the EU has provided an uncertain landscape for those in the catching, processing and wider seafood industry, we have shown we can be resilient before, and I look forward to working with businesses to capitalise on potential growth opportunities.

“The UK’s withdrawal from the EU will likely affect every aspect of the way we operate, impacting the way we source, process and distribute our goods for export, as well as where those goods might be going. Therefore, it is vital that we remain focused on promoting profitable, sustainable market opportunities.

‘A fantastic resource’

“Having worked in the seafood industry for many years, I recognise Seafood Scotland as a fantastic, free resource for those in our sector and hope that my skills, experience and guidance can help us expand our services and resources so every business has what they need to grow.”

The WSFPO markets the seafood – mainly langoustines and scampi – caught by its members.

Increasing trade

McDonell takes over from John Anderson, who has stepped down from the chair due to other commitments but will remain on the Seafood Scotland board.

Seafood Scotland is an industry organisation that works with fishermen, fish/shellfish farmers, processors, retailers, food service companies, caterers, NGOs and consumers to increase trade opportunities for the Scottish seafood sector.
