Norway salmon price falls again as export volume hits another record
For the second week in a row, the spot price fell last week. But for the fifth week in a row it was above the price in the same week last year. However, the export volume in week 41 has never been larger.
The spot price for Norwegian salmon decreased by NOK 2.99 per kilo in week 41, down to NOK 70.82 (£5.24) per kilo. That price was NOK 4.89/kg better than the same week in 2024.
However, the average price so far this year is much lower, at NOK 75.93/kg, compared to NOK 95.89 at the same time last year.
Export
The volume of salmon exported from Norway increased by 1,000 tonnes from the previous week, and at 37,042 tonnes (round weight), it was the highest export volume ever in week 41 and 3% more than this week a year ago.
So far this year, Norway has exported 1.24 million tonnes of salmon, 16.6% more than last year during the same period.
Feed
As of week 40, 1.72 million tonnes of salmon and trout feed have been sold, 9% more than at the same time in 2024.
The trend for the last four weeks (weeks 37-40) is 5% up from the corresponding period last year.
High volumes
SEB analyst Sander Lie commented on Thursday that the bank expects the salmon price to be around NOK 70 per kilo next week, which he points out is unchanged from the levels they are hearing this week and the same week last year.
"The industry is still reporting relatively high volumes and good supply of larger fish (over 5 kg), and expects a similar picture into next week," he writes.
He also adds that so far this year, total Norwegian exports are up by 17%.
