Norway Royal Salmon (NRS) has announced that it is investing NOK 750 million (£68m) in a new smolt plant in Dåfjord in Karlsøy municipality, outside Tromsø.

The smolt plant is strategically placed in relation to NRS’s activity in Northern Norway and is an important piece in the development of the company, NRS said in a statement.

The plant will have significant local and regional ripple effects and around 20 employees will work at the plant during the operational phase. A state-of-the-art recycling facility (RAS plant) is planned and NRS has recently been granted permission to produce up to 10 million smolts with a size of up to 400 grams. Construction will start in September 2019.

Norwegian suppliers

Tromsø contractor TotalRenovering will build the facility, and has brought on board water quality technology provider Aqua Optima and Overhalla Betongbygg, which provides prefabricated concrete elements and steel constructions to the building and construction industry, including RAS projects.

NRS chief executive Charles Høstlund said: “NRS chose Norwegian expertise for the construction of our offshore project Arctic Offshore Farming, and it is therefore gratifying that we can again choose Norwegian suppliers now for the construction of our smolt facility outside Tromsø.

“That we can also choose players where we as a company are located is extra pleasing, and we are looking forward to working with TotalRenovering as partners through this project.”

NRS expects to harvest 37,500 tonnes of salmon this year and has ambitions to grow from a mid-sized to a large salmon farmer.
