22 per cent of the UK population say they are currently likely to change the products they buy due to sustainability issues. 60 per cent say they are more aware of it, but sustainability of food does not affect their shopping habits. This indicates that despite ethical considerations, quality and price are still the main issues for British consumers.

However, 45 per cent believe the issue of sustainable seafood will impact their purchase behaviour in the future, indicating that ethical purchasing is here to stay.

57 per cent of consumers look at pack info and 47 per cent check for an eco-label to ensure that the fish they are eating is not at risk. A further 45 per cent would ask the local fishmonger and 43 per cent would make sure that there were no risks, by shopping at a retailer they trust.

This suggests that in an increasingly complex retail market, certification provides an ability to prove that producers do the right things and give the consumers peace of mind.
