
Four escapes in 2014

Scottish statistics on farmed fish escapes for 2014 up to 23 January show that there have been total of four breaches of containment on Scottish salmon farms so far.
The first incident took place on the 2 january at Balta Island Seafare Ltd’s Balta Island site in Shetland. A total of 500 4kg fish escaped due to a whole in the net caused by a predator.
The was another incident at the same farm at some point between the 14-29 January, but at this point the number of fish that escaped has not been confirmed.
On the 19 January an unconrfirmed number of salmon of 1.96kg escaped from Meridian Salmon’s Ness of Copister site. The Scottish Government is awaiting final notification for numbers lost.
Then on the 23 January one 5.8kg salmon escaped from Scottish Sea Farms’ Vidlin North site in Shetland due to a human error.
The final escape figure for 2013 is yet to be confirmed.
