A whole wild salmon for £3

Published Modified

According to the Daily Mail, ASDA said it has been able to achieve the record low price for the 2.6lb Alaskan pink salmon by dramatically cutting shipping costs, which previously would have left customers paying £7 for the same product.

To put the price in perspective, the newspaper compared the average price of a 1lb can of salmon which was £1.75 in 1979 - meaning the £3 Asda fish costs less than the same weight in tinned salmon did 30 years ago.

An Asda spokesman said the fish used to be shipped from Alaska via Seattle and the Netherlands, but this year the firm has found a way to miss out Seattle “which has cut the costs a lot”.

The pink salmon is also known as the 'humpback' or 'humpy' because of the shape it develops before spawning. It grows to a maximum 4lb and 25in. Tens of millions are netted from the Pacific seas around Alaska each year, the Daily Mail reported.
