Jostein Pettersen, operations and development director of Tromso company JM Hansen, said the firm had this week secured two orders - one worth NOK3.5m and the other NOK2.4m - from two of the biggest fish farming companies in Norway.

The LED lights are supplied by Australian company Planet Lighting, which also exports the product to Scotland.

Pettersen said the big attraction of the light is that it weighs just 2.4kg, considerably less than other cage lights that tip the scales at between 6kg and 12kg.

Easy to work with

He continued: "So many people have been looking at this light. Because it is so low in weight it is very easy for people to work with. Everyone we talk to likes the fact it is so easy to work with. Lights have to be taken out of cages to clean them and also when they clean the net.

"I think we are going to sell NOK12 million worth of these lights for the year, and we only started in June."

JM Hansen has teamed up with hardware supplier Ahlsell to market the lights.

Pettersen claimed the product had the "best specification of the lights on the market and is a good price", adding that it can "take a lot of impact" without breaking. The 600 watt lamp produces 73,000 lumens.
