First fish stocked in Nordlaks' new semi-closed cage
A total of 68,464 fish with an average weight of 5.1 kg were delivered from the neighbouring locality of Brottøy.
"Even though it has taken longer than it should have and been more demanding than we had imagined, we are a bit proud of where we have come with this project," says Bjarne Johansen, operations director at Nordlaks Havbruk AS, in a press release from the company.
Since the facility arrived in Vesterålen in November last year, there has been a lot of work to complete all the systems so that it is ready to house fish.
The ocean tank, or Hydra project, is a development project where new technology will be tested.
Visited the yard in Turkey
Owner of Nordlaks, Inge Berg, has previously been to the shipyard in Turkey and seen the Storbåtsegget (Big Boat Egg) before departing for Norway.
"It will be special to see the Storbåtsegget here at home. This has been a long process and we are excited to get the facility operational. It is especially exciting since this is a development project and our first semi-closed facility," Berg said at the time.
The goal of the "Big Boat Egg" is to reduce sea lice and improve the health of the salmon. At the same time, the steel walls of the structure make it possible to test a location exposed to currents that would not be suitable for traditional cages.
