Fin Donnelly used the dead humpback whale in his latest attempt to get the Canadian government to back his anti-salmon farming Bill C-228.

During Question Period on Monday, NDP MP Fin Donnelly sought Liberal government support for a proposed bill to protect marine life in light of death of a humpback whale found entangled in BC Tuesday.

“A humpback whale was found dead, entangled in an empty net, near a salmon farm near Campbell River”, Donnelly said to the house.

He went on to say how this was the second time a whale has become entangled in this fish farm in three months.

“Open net salmon farms are clearly a risk to marine mammals”, Donnelly said.

“Will the government eliminate this problem by supporting my bill to transition this industry to safe closed-containment, and protect marine mammals?”, Donnelly asked the House.

Dominic Leblanc, the Honorable Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard answered Donnelly’s question.

“We obviously share our colleague’s concern with the respect to the protection of marine mammals. The circumstances around this humpback whale’s mishap are obviously of huge concern to the government”, said Leblanc.

“That’s why two weeks ago, the Prime Minister made a historic investment of $1.5 billion dollars for ocean protections, and put in place a series of measures that will not only ensure better protection of marine mammals, but also make the scientific and operational investments to ensure that this kind of horrible incident does not happen again”, Leblanc said.
