World Aquaculture conference nets UN FAO director as key speaker

Senior United Nations official Dr Manuel Barange has been announced as a plenary speaker at World Aquaculture 2025 India (WA2025), which takes place in Hyderabad in November.

Barange is assistant director general of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation and director of its Fisheries and Aquaculture Division.

A global fisheries and aquaculture expert, Barange is a former deputy chief executive and science director at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory and chair of the scientific committee of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).

He is an honorary professor at the University of Exeter, UK, and a visiting professor at the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute (CAFS), Qingdao, China.

His plenary address is aligned with the conference theme, “Aquaculture Opportunities, Options, and Optimism”.

100-plus nationalities

WA2025 is organised by the World Aquaculture Society (WAS) from November 10-13 and offers three days of conference sessions and a concurrent three-day trade show. It will feature technical presentations, workshops, exhibitions, and offer extensive networking opportunities.

The event at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre – Novotel is hosted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), with strong support from P.V. Narsimha Rao Telangana Veterinary University and the Society of Aquaculture Professionals (SAP).

The conference is expected to attract attendees from more than 100 countries.

Student travel awards

In support the next generation of aquaculture professionals, WA2025 is offering Student Travel Awards presented by the WAS-Asian Pacific Chapter. The awards aim to encourage students to attend the conference, providing them with the opportunity to present their research, submit an abstract, participate in discussions, and connect with leaders in the field. The award funds will be given to the recipient to assist with travel expenses to attend the conference and present their abstract.

Researchers, academics, and industry professionals wishing to submit abstracts for oral or poster presentations must do so before the deadline of July 15.

“This is a prime opportunity to share groundbreaking research and innovations with a diverse, international audience,” WAS said in a press release.

WAS said krill harvester Qrill Aqua – Aker Qrill Company had become the latest sponsor of the event, adding to support already provided by Blue Aqua, Devee Group, INVE Aquaculture, MSD Animal Health, SyAqua, and Zeigler.
